Privacy
What this site collects, why it collects it, and how to get it removed.
This policy covers charles.green and Charles Green, LLC (“we,” “us”). It explains what the site collects, why, and what you can do about it.
The site is operated by Charles Green, LLC, a US company, which is the data controller for the personal information described here.
What we collect
- Newsletter subscription. Your email address, whether you have confirmed it, which issues you have chosen to receive, and the delivery events the sending system records: sent, delivered, bounced, and complaints. We do not track whether you open an issue or click a link in it.
- Questions to Charles AI. The text of the question you submit to the question widget. Questions are not tied to your identity and you do not need an account to ask one.
- Technical data. Standard server logs and privacy-respecting product analytics: IP address, browser type, and pages viewed. The analytics can also record a replay of a visit — what was on screen and where you clicked — so we can see what is broken or confusing. Where a replay is recorded, everything you type into a form is masked before it is stored, so your email address is never in one, and the question widget is left out of replays entirely. There is no advertising or cross-site tracking on this site.
- Abuse protection. Forms are protected by a bot check, which receives a token from your browser to distinguish people from automated traffic.
How we use it
Your email address is used to send the newsletter, the confirmation and preference emails that go with it, and occasional messages about our own products and services. It is not used for any other purpose, and it is never sold, rented, or shared for anyone else’s marketing.
Technical data is used to keep the site running, understand which writing gets read, and investigate abuse.
Charles AI, the question widget
Questions are answered from published work only. The corpus is built from what is already on this site and nothing else, so a question cannot reach anything private.
Submitted questions are retained for a short operational window so that abuse can be investigated and answers can be checked for accuracy. They are not linked to a person, they are not used to train a model, and they are not shared. After that window they are deleted.
Double opt-in and leaving
Subscribing requires confirming your address from an email we send you. Until you confirm, nothing is sent to you.
Every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe link and the headers that let your mail client unsubscribe for you. The preferences page lets you take fewer emails instead of leaving, change your address, or leave outright. Leaving takes one click and removes your address from the list.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. It is shared only with the infrastructure providers that run the site: hosting, database, email delivery, bot protection, and analytics. Those providers act under agreements that limit what they may do with it. We also disclose information where the law requires it.
Retention
Your subscription record is kept while you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe we keep a minimal record of the address for the sole purpose of not emailing you again. Server logs are kept for a short operational window. Question text is kept for the window stated above.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. Email team@charles.green and we will act on it. If you are in the EEA or the UK you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, subscribers are told by email. The date at the top of this page is when it last changed.
